Lush green forest with a winding river under a cloudy sky.

Copperwood Mine & Michigan's Porcupine Mountains

Copperwood Mine, a sulfide waste mine proposed by Canadian shell company Highland Copper, is threatening the pristine Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area, the Presque Isle River, and Lake Superior.

Protect the Porkies

Our Grassroots Yooper Allies

We support our colleagues in grassroots activism against the Copperwood Mine: Protect the Porkies. In their own words:

"Protect the Porkies is a collective of concerned citizens from around the Upper Peninsula, the great state of Michigan, and beyond, who are uniting to resist the development of Copperwood, an inexperienced Canadian company's proposal to mine next to and underneath Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and store 40+ million tons of waste in unprecedented proximity to Lake Superior, all for the sake of a few boom-and-bust jobs and copper to be shipped out of country."

The proposed mine would be immediately adjacent to the Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Area, which contains the largest tract of remaining old growth forest in Michigan, home to some of the most unique ecologies in the world. Computer modeling shows that nearly inevitable tailings dam ruptures would contaminate Lake Superior within minutes.

Action Steps

Our allies at Protect the Porkies have outlined three key action items right now:

ACTION #1: Challenge the Wastewater Permit

ACTION #2: Oppose $250 million in financing from EXIM Bank

ACTION #3: Urge lawmakers to halt potential federal funding
