We keep track of what Lansing lawmakers are up to. These are the bills and policies currently on our radar.
Minimum of 12 months. Several such bills have been proposed now; we stand by our original support of the bipartisan December 2025 Data Center Regulation Act (HB 5594-5596).
The best way to stop this siege of data centers is to end the incentives which attracted them in the first place. We support the bipartisan bills HB 5396-5398 introduced in December 2025.
Including state legislators, as well as local township and county officials. Several such bills have been introduced; we support Rep. Miller’s HB 5399 to ban NDAs on data centers.
In Michigan, developers effectively have a free pass to take as much water from Michigan’s aquifers as they want, with no bond or recourse for Michigan residents. This needs to stop. We support Sen. Bayer’s SB 761 to put reasonable limitations on high volume water consumption.
This is another glaring gap in protections for Michigan’s residents and water. Michigan residents, regulators, and officials deserve to have this information. We support Sen. Shink’s SB 762 to require data centers to be transparent about their water and energy use.
Right now, Michiganders are slated to shoulder the cost burden for the massive electrical and water buildout these data centers will require. This is unacceptable. We support Sen. Geiss’ SB 763 to make developers pay for their own infrastructure.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has been a hub for taxpayer abuse. Under SOAR legislature, it has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars on toxic projects which have overridden the will of local residents and destroyed natural resources, including Gotion, Marshall Ford/CATL, the Mundy megamess, and the Copperwood Mine. Several bills have been introduced which give lip service to fixing the MEDC, but none to date have presented any serious, sustainable solutions.
The MEDC’s Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) board approved $50M in taxpayer funding for the Copperwood Mine, in spite of being told no by local tribes, residents, and state lawmakers for three years. The MSF board’s August 2026 vote to approve the $50M without legislative approval almost assuredly violated the law. We need Michigan’s Senate to draft a bill to repeal this funding; then we need the House and the Senate to pass it.
The House majority's so-called “Housing Readiness” bill package is a thinly veiled deregulation scam to strip Michigan's townships of their rights to determine local land use so that developers can build whatever they want, wherever they want. We strongly oppose HB 5529–5532 and 5581–5585.
This package of bills would strip Michigan of its unique wetlands protections, bringing us down to federal levels of gutted regulation. Michigan’s incredible waterways deserve protection, not commodification. We strongly oppose HB 5501, 5502, 5536, and 5556.
Democratic lawmakers told Michiganders that 2023’s Climate & Energy laws (PA 229-235) would “clean” the grid, save the environment, and lower energy rates. In fact: it’s done the exact opposite, on all fronts. 100,000s of acres of Michigan farmland and forest are being destroyed for utility energy projects with highly inefficient transmission. Meanwhile, the state still has zero framework for homes and businesses to generate their own energy through built-in renewables. And PA233 gutted local township’s rights to determine land use. These laws must be repealed and rewritten.
